I always thought of my mom as a wannabe hippie, which I kind of followed in her footsteps for a time when I was 14-15. Thenl I got into Dylan & Hunter and fancied myself an anti-hippie, long-haired country boy, Dudesque type. In any case, I have made my mom nearly as many mixtapes as I have her little brother, Daryl, so it is pretty simple to know what she liked. Plus I grew up with her old records (like Sticky Fingers that she mostly bought to see what was behind that zipper). She was into Dylan and George was her favorite Beatle (just to be different from her friends, though not so different as to be into Ringo). But alas, she got married at 19 in 1968 and went to Panama instead of San Francisco (fortunate for the circumstances resulting in the thermodynamic miracle of my birth).
Further proof of her desire to be an old wood hippie at her 61 years young is her love of Prairie Home Companion and NPR in general. So I put this mix together, “linked” by Prairie Home Companion bits and with a catch-up from a few of her favorite artists, though some golden oldies mixed in as well and other songs just geared toward putting a smile on her face. And it did the trick (especially the Arlo, of course), since her birthday was yesterday and we actually listened to this together 3 weeks ago as we road-tripped to visit her mom, my Grandma.
Grandma wasn’t much of a cook, and she passed that along to her daughter who fortunately did not pass that along to me, though I have never made Beebopareebop Rhubarb Pie…
Beebopareebop Rhubarb Pie
* 1 unbaked 9 or 10? pie crust
* 4 C thinly sliced rhubarb
* 1 1/3 to 1 1/2 C sugar
* 1/3 C milk
* 3 eggs
* 1/4 t salt
* 1 t vanilla
* 2 T flour
* lemon juice
Beat eggs and sugar together and add all the other ingredients. Drizzle lemon juice over everything. Pour into prepared 9? to 10? crust and bake at 425 F for 20 min, after which turn the heat down to 350 F and bake for the additional 30 min. Let the custard cool and set before serving.
Yes, nothing gets the taste of fear and humiliation out of your mouth like Beebopareebop Rhubarb Pie.

A thoughtful set indeed but what did your mother think of it? Like to taste the set but not too sure about the rhubarb (bad childhood tummy experience)
Happy Birthday to Mom! I did expect to see Mark Knopfler, but I was thinking of "A Prairie Wedding." Different song here but you have all the bases covered. I am sure she appreciated it.
Happy Birthday Doowad's Mom! Mix-wise this looks pretty special and, with few exceptions, very much a slice of americana. Love the Garrison interludes. And yup I'm kinda tempted by the pizza and I don't much care for pizzas!
Gosh I am nearly old enough to be your Mom. No wonder so much of this looks appealing to me.
What's not to like? Really digging the Kermit & Fozzie you snuck in there. Happiest Birthday wishes to your Mom!
Some pleasant surprises on here.I listen to it and it was very pleasing to my ears.Thanks for your hard work.Well Done!
Lovely gift to your lovely mother, whom you are so lucky to still have, rhubarb pie or no.
excellent, hope she liked it
These are really fine listening. You can feel the love in the cratf of the song selections and sequencing. Of the two Discs, I find the second one exceptional. Great work mate.
What lovely stuff and even lovelier sentiments...Love the George/Ringo bit...Ha!...Home run, Doowad...:)
That rhubarb pie does look like a pizza. Good job I didn't make the mistake when it was in front of me, cos I don't like rhubarb.
Like this mix, though, a great deal..
I hope she had a wonderful birthday. I'm sure this mix put a smile on her face. That pie looks delicious.
